The three-member committee appointed to conduct an internal investigation into the alleged Violence incident at the Information Systems and Management Department of Parliament has stopped its investigation midway due to the victim officer’s outspoken rejection.
When the committee met on Friday, the victim officer attended the meeting and protested in person, according to parliamentary sources. She has also written to the Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera, expressing her opposition to the committee.
The officer has strongly objected to the committee’s chairperson, Hansard Editor, Nayani Loku Kodikara de Silva. She has told her committee that she may face a difficult situation during the investigation due to the close family ties the committee chairman allegedly maintains with some officials of the governing body.
It is learnt that the victim officer is also strongly requesting that an external investigation be conducted as the incident has already been investigated. When we inquired with the Speaker of Parliament in this regard, he said that since a preliminary investigation has already been conducted, it is his opinion that it is appropriate to refer the incident to an external investigation.
Meanwhile, the Women Parliamentarians' Forum has decided to request the Speaker to conduct an external investigation into this incident without delay, said Member of Parliament Chamindrani Kiriella. Many members of parliament who have expressed their views on this incident say that it is most appropriate to conduct an external investigation into this matter.
